These gooseberries have typical spiny stems, although these spines are small. The flowers are pure yellow, not red and yellow as seen in Ribes montigenum, Alpine Prickly Currant. The leaves are deeply lobed with serrated edges. It is found growing from low elevations to 9000 feet in dry areas. The fruits are hairless red berries.
